Glimpses of the Authoritarian Regime in Syed Muhammad Ashraf's Novellate "Nambardar Ka Neela"
Abstract
Syed Muhammad Ashraf is a prominent short story writer and novelist of Urdu literature. Many of his short stories have become popular in the literary world. The following is his famous novellete, "Nambardar Ka Neela", which was well received internationally. This novel has also been translated into many languages. "Nambardar Ka Neela" demands attention and discussion in terms of its theme, presentation, characterization, and language and narration, especially in terms of presenting animals as characters. And Ashraf's brilliance is that he presents a view of human character in the traits of animals. The novel "Nambardar Ka Neela" is a novel in which the instincts of a human being, i.e. Thakur Udal Singh, and the animal, i.e. Neela, have merged with each other. After studying this novel, the impression that emerges about his art is that he is basically a critic and critic of the decadence of the individual and society of his era.
