Abstract
This article considers the usefulness of ideological analysis (as discussed and applied by Brettler 1995, The Creation of History in Ancient Israel), using the case of the caliph Mutaid (r. ad 892–902). His image as a champion of orthodox Islam and exemplar of effective Muslim rulership was developed by Ibn al‐Jawzī (d. ad 1201) in response to his own, as it seemed to him soon‐to‐be‐realized, ideal of a Sunni caliphate connected and responsive to the populace at large. Clearly, Ibn al‐Jawzī's account of Mutaid is ideologically driven and he applies the same outlook to other historical subjects.
